MARCH 2018 - VOLUNTEER AT THE LOS ANGELES REGIONAL FOOD BANK
03.10
About the LA Regional Food Bank HUNGER IN L.A. We are a city of contrasts. While many are thriving, 1.4 million Los Angelenos face hunger. Los Angeles County is home to one of the largest populations of any county in the nation. We are also home to one of the largest accounts of hunger. An estimated 1.4 million people in Los Angeles County live with food insecurity, which means that approximately 16% of those who live here do not know where their next meal is coming from. Hunger affects old and young alike. While fixed-income seniors, people with disabilities and low-income families are the most visible examples of people who struggle, hunger doesn’t stop there. Hunger affects all groups of people regardless of education level, employment status or ethnicity. WHO WE HELP We distribute food and other essentials to children, seniors, families and other individuals in need. Community support enables the Food Bank to serve more than 300,000 people on a monthly basis. |
The Mission of the Los Angeles Regional Food Bank is to mobilize resources to fight hunger in our community. To fulfill our mission, we source and acquire food and other products and distribute them to needy people through charitable agencies or directly through programs; conduct hunger education and awareness campaigns and advocate for public policies that alleviate hunger; and energize the community to get involved and support hunger relief. Our Vision is that no one goes hungry in Los Angeles. Since 1973, the Los Angeles Regional Food Bank has distributed more than 1 billion pounds of food. It provides food to 300,000 people every month and in 2016 we distributed 55 million meals–that’s more than 62 million pounds of food. 20% of that food is fresh produce. The Food Bank collects food from hundreds of resources, which – with the help of 30,000 volunteers annually – it distributes through a network of more than 625 partner agencies. 97% of revenue raised goes directly to programs.
